Doctor Who's upcoming season just got even better,Happy (2015) with the addition of spectacular Broadway star, singer, and two-time RuPaul’s Drag Racewinner Jinkx Monsoon.
Announced by the BBC on Monday, the "Queen of Queens" will join the cast of Doctor Who"in a major role" when it returns later this year. Monsoon recently made her Broadway debut as Matron "Mama’" Morton in Chicago, the first drag queen to play the role, and an addition which boosted Broadway's longest-running show's ticket sales and broke box office records.
"I’m honoured, thrilled, and utterly excited to join Doctor Who!" Monsoon said in a press statement. "Russell T Davies is a visionary and a brilliant writer— I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew! I hope there’s room in the TARDIS for my luggage."
With showrunner Russell T. Davies (who ran the David Tennant era of Doctor Who) at the helm, the series will see a changing of the guard on and off screen.
"In a galaxy of comets and supernovas, here comes the biggest star of all. Jinkx Monsoon is on a collision course with the TARDIS, and Doctor Who will never be the same again!" said Davies in a press statement.
In November, Tennant will return for three special episodes as the Fourteenth Doctor (the Doctor Who star he re-regenerated into his former role unexpectedly in an October 2022 special, taking over from the Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker). Then, Sex Educationstar Ncuti Gatwa steps into the coveted role as the Fifteenth Doctor over the holiday period.
Gatwa will be joined by Millie Gibson as the Time Lord's companion Ruby Sunday, alongside a host of newcomers to the franchise: Heartstopper's Yasmin Finney will play Donna and Shaun’s daughter, Rose Temple-Noble, Then Barbara Met Alanstar Ruth Madeley will play a character called Shirley Anne Bingham, and Neil Patrick Harris will take on a villain role.
Doctor Who returns in November 2023 on the BBC for the UK and Ireland, and on Disney+ internationally.
