"A small sign of solidarity," DuVernay wrote on Twitter. "I chose to wear a gown by a designer from a majority Muslim country."
The folks behind the beautiful dress are Ashi Studio, a studio based in Beirut, Lebanon, where 54 percent of the population is Muslim.
Before the awards, the director also showed off a sweatshirt with the name of Trayvon Martin emblazoned on the front. Five years ago, Martin was killed at the age of 17.
