Warning: This post inevitably contains spoilers,All Out with AJ Raval (2025) if you consider anything studios purposely show journalists before release a "spoiler."
The new Wonder Womanmovie is due for release in June and unsurprisingly there's a huge amount of speculation around it. If the trailers weren't enough to satisfy your appetite, we have a little bit more to keep you going until it hits cinemas.
SEE ALSO: Behind the scenes of the new badass, blockbuster 'Wonder Woman'Mashablegot a sneak peak of some unfinished sequences of the movie during post-production in London. Here are a few things we learned:
The film opening is set on the fictional island of Themyscira. Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is an Amazon warrior who was made from clay by her mother and brought to life by the God Zeus. Themyscira is a place where its inhabitants live in a very green way. There are no doors, for example, as they build into natural structures. This stunning island is abruptly disturbed by German soldiers who enter into a fierce battle with the Amazon warriors.
When U.S. fighter pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes in Themyscira, you'd think that would be the perfect opportunity to introduce the much loved invisible plane that has been a fixture of the Wonder Woman story in DC comics since it started out 75 years ago. Not so. Trevor crashes a plane that the eye can see. Sorry.
Interestingly this film is set during the First World War as opposed to the World War II which has featured in previous Wonder Womanstorylines. The year is 1918, so the war is in the final stages. More on how that came about here.
Director Patty Jenkins first floated Wonder Womanby Warner Bros over a decade ago. For one reason or another, including getting pregnant in 2008, the timing wasn't right. Jenkins had a few offers, almost ended up directing Thor(some would say she dodged a bullet) and by the time Wonder Womancame around again, it felt right. "I had been making short films and then went on to make Monsterand suddenly I was, like, super dark director. But people who knew me were, like, of course you're making Wonder Woman. That’s the irony," says Jenkins.
In the movie, there is a moment where Diana acquires her costume. But we aren't told exactly where the costume came from. "We believe it is a mystical gift from the gods," says Anna Obropta, production liaison for Wonder Woman. The different parts of the costume have powers but ultimately it's because Wonder Woman is wearing it that it works. Diana engages in many brave battles in the film, all the while discovering her powers. She can deflect bullets with her bracelets and her shield, she has a lasso to capture enemies and force people to tell the truth. She can jump to great heights, she’s super fast, she speaks hundreds of languages and she’s got superior strength.
Steve Trevor and Diana are the clear-cut love interests in this film. In previous iterations, Wonder Woman's BFF Etta Candy is romantically linked and even married to Steve. Not in this movie. "There have been a lot of different versions of Etta and this is the version that works for Steve," says Jenkins. "She becomes the humorous woman entrenched in this period of time where the world is sexist, but she’s got a great way of handling and navigating all of that, and she adores Diana."
This is intended to be a classic film. To quote director Patty Jenkins: "We care about humor, we care about heroism, we care about the arc in the story, we want to make it elegant. Go for it, don’t hold back. If it's Indiana Jones or Rick from Casablancameets Wonder Woman, I’m in."
The official trailer for the movie was released in November. And we have it on good authority that there will be another trailer before the film is released. Some reports say it's expected this week.
Apparently there is a graphic novel being released in May to compliment the release of the movie. YES! Music to the ears of so many Wonder Womanfans.
Cellist Tina Guo, who played the theme for Wonder Woman’s scene in Batman v Superman, tweeted a video of herself playing a metal version of the song, which is expected to feature in Wonder Woman. "Recording #ElectricCello for my new #WonderWoman single ... coming soon!" she wrote. Let's be honest about it, it's pretty electrifying.
The rumor mill is in overdrive ahead of the film's release. For example, who are really the evil forces in the film? Is the villainous German General Erich Ludendorff (played by Danny Huston) really Ares, the God of War? The makers will not tell us but it's a logical deduction. "I don't think we set out to be mysterious about who the villain is," says Jenkins. "But that what it's turned into now so I don't want to comment."
Many of the rumors also relate to Batman and the Justice League. We already know that Diana receives a 100-year-old photo from Bruce Wayne, which overwhelms her with memories and takes us back to her roots. As for whether there will be an appearance by Batman later on in Wonder Woman, the jury's out.
"It’s interesting there have been real and not real spoilers," says Jenkins. "I just want everyone to give the movie a chance and get to see it. Don’t ruin the experience for people."
