Animal Crossing's April 23rd update brought some significant changes to Nintendo's massively popular home loan payoff and Terms of servicefriendship simulator, not least of which was the addition of an art gallery to the game's stately museum.
As in previous games in the series, players can fill the art gallery by purchasing individual paintings and sculptures from Redd, the wily fox smuggler. Some of Redd's art is counterfeit, however, and it's up to the player to examine the goods before they buy to avoid being hoodwinked. But how would an average person know how to spot fake art with a passing glance?
Enter: art history majors.
Now that Redd is a major part of the game, art historians, people who majored in art history, or just people who took an art history course one time are thrilled to have a socially distant use for their set of art-spotting skills.
Some people on Twitter saw this heyday coming a mile away.

At least one person questioned the logic behind putting an essentially university-level minigame in a series meant for children but hey, how else are they going to learn?

It's not the end of the world if someone buys counterfeit art in Animal Crossing. Blathers will set the player straight and they get to keep a fun, slightly off-looking bootleg of a famous painting to display for themselves. The important thing is that people are learning about art. And not to trust smuggler foxes. But mostly the art thing.

Thanks to Animal Crossingand art history majors, players can learn a little something about culture between picking fruit, smashing rocks, and hunting unholy legions of tarantulas for money.
